Carbon Steel vs. Stainless Steel Density and Weight Differences

While carbon steel and stainless steel are both iron-based alloys, their chemical compositions differ, resulting in slight differences in density and weight.

Composition and Density

Carbon steel consists of iron and carbon, with a standard density of approximately 7,850 kg/m³. Stainless steel contains chromium (minimum 10.5%), nickel, and other elements like molybdenum to prevent rust.

These elements are denser than iron, which makes stainless steel grades slightly heavier than carbon steel. Stainless steel 304 has a density of 7,930 kg/m³, while Grade 316 has a density of 8,000 kg/m³.
