Metric to Imperial Steel Sizing: Converting mm to Inches Safely

When working on international projects, you may need to convert steel dimensions between metric (millimeters) and imperial (inches) units. Because steel sections are manufactured to specific standards in each system, accurate conversion is essential to prevent fit issues on site.

Direct Conversions and Nominal Sizes

A direct conversion uses the standard factor of 25.4 mm per inch. However, steel shapes often use nominal designations that do not match the direct conversion. A US 1-inch pipe has an outer diameter of 1.315 inches (33.4 mm), which is different from a direct conversion of 25.4 mm.

Mitigating Conversion Errors

Always verify nominal designations against standard charts before converting dimensions. Relying on direct conversions for nominal sizes can result in components that do not fit together on site.
