Hot Rolled vs. Cold Rolled Steel: Dimensions & Tolerances

The manufacturing process used to produce steel sections affects their dimensional tolerances, surface finish, and weight consistency. The two main options are hot rolled and cold rolled steel.

Hot Rolled Steel

Hot rolled steel is rolled at high temperatures (over 1,700°F), which is above the steel's recrystallization temperature. As it cools, the steel contracts slightly, resulting in wider dimensional tolerances and a rough surface scale. It is typically used for structural shapes where precise dimensions are not critical.

Cold Rolled Steel

Cold rolled steel is hot rolled steel that undergoes further processing at room temperature. This process yields tight dimensional tolerances, a smooth finish, and consistent thickness. It is typically used for precision parts and sheet metal work where accurate sizing is essential.
